Have you noticed how much I’ve been posting? There’s good reason for that. M. is on vacation until the end of August, and that leaves me off the hook for running around like a crazy person for 5 or 6 hours a day. It’s amazing what you can do with an extra 6 hours a day. I have read a lot of things that don’t come through the mail. I’ve battled with laptops filled to the brim with STD’s (Dave’s laptop…one too many porn sites…he needs one of those silicone dolls or a girlfriend…who are we kidding? what woman alive could resist the mountain man beard and D-cups!). I finished my paper. And, I’ve found time to consider this blog.
I’ve been reading some of the BlogHer conference posts, and I’m intrigued. I’m not a joiner by nature. I’m a lone wolf (am too dammit). I have learned over the years that it’s best if I pretend to be aloof and stay the heck away from organizations of any sort. There’s just too much pissing of legs going on in most of them for my taste, and inevitably, my “I’d love to help” attitude is considered a threat to the (un)holy order (or maybe it’s my willingness to call a spade a spade…I’ve noticed people don’t care to hear the truth sometimes).
But, because of the BlogHer posts, I’m starting to wonder where I fit into the blogosphere. Fussy has links to some BlogHer keynote speakers and a link to a NY Times article on BlogHer which mentions several blogs, and I’ve been peeking in on them (what? wolves circle their prey first…not that I’d prey on anyone…well, not since that last restraining order). Some of them don’t have any more commenters than this blog has which makes me think I must be neglecting this blog somehow.
Clusty pumped me up a good bit too when I searched “honeywine” and my blog came up as the #2 hit out of over 6,000! Go ahead and look. I’ll wait. I admit to looking for it a few months back and couldn’t even find it until I added Pascal to the search (I was still about the 8th hit). The nice thing was that it was the post about me shaving his butt. I like a nice opening when meeting new people. Uhhh…I mean…a nice opening line.
Feeling guilty and thinking about where those other 80 or so daily hits are coming from (it can’t be my commenters looking that often…ya’ll know I don’t post that much), I decided to see what Stumble was. In case you haven’t noticed the sidebar, I think I screwed it up pretty good. I’m guessing I’ll have to go whole hog and move up to a domain name and a real professional (i.e.- cash enhanced) blog for it to work on wordpress. But, should I get my own domain? Honeywine.com is already taken. So, I’d have to figure something out. Plus, several of the blogs cited by the NY Times (and I have to believe that you’re pretty hip into the bloggingness if the NY Times talks about you) have blogs that aren’t on their own special domain. So I’m wondering if that’s just asking for more trouble than its worth?
I’ve honestly become semi-addicted to blogs (yours especially…ok, so I’m not good at sucking up). I like being able to write about virtually anything that pops into my head, and it’s nice to look inside other people’s heads and to find out if they think you’re a nutter. I’m starting to think I would like to add to my readership and up the ante on my writing and just reach out more. I don’t expect to become rich (well I can dang sure dream about it…we all do…then reality sets in), but frankly, ya’ll have become my online dating alternative. Other than the blogs, there’s just not much reason for me to fight the dial-up unless I’m working or looking for something specific. Since M. controls the tv remote like it’s going to triple the size of his manhood if he just pushes enough buttons, it’s kind of nice to live vicariously online. Living in a jerk water town can definitely add to the loneliness, and it’s nice to have intelligent people to listen in on (hell no, husbands don’t count…I found M. reading this the other day when I came back from the bathroom…he told me he likes to read my blog because “it lets me know what’s going on in your life”….ummm…we spend all but 3 hours a day together! wth?).
Am I setting myself up for trouble? Should I forget about “upgrading” to the cash-blog? (mind you, it won’t happen for a couple of months at best…until the class is dead and gone)

Hmm. I’m going to give you my honest opinion now that I’m paying for my own site and domain. I wouldn’t do it until you are sure you will have some extra time to devote to your blog. You will lose some search traffic right away because when you switch your blog it won’t be indexed with the search engines right away. And you will need to get to learn the ropes of the new blog and want to work at building your numbers. I’m not trying to deter you, just letting you know you will want to spend some more time at the computer in the beginning when you first switch so just keep that in mind. I think you’d do fine though and pick up on everything really quickly (unlike me).

I know nothing about blogher (altho I think I registered there in the beginning) and as for making money I know nothing about that either. I put adsense on my blog as a laugh. In one year I made $6.94 … LOL Now that’s funny. Plus they advertise stuff you blog about … which is funny to me too. I’m easily amused, obviously.
Anyway, whatever you chose to do … as long as you’re having fun. That’s what matters. I’ve been blogging for a year now and look at it as my hobby and look forward to it. Plus I meet new bloggers all the time…like you!

If we’re dating then you had better buy me a glass of wine first!
Seriously though, you do it whatever way works for you. That’s the thing about blogging – it’s absolutely individual. What works for some wouldn’t work for others. There isn’t a right or wrong way, in my (very humble) opinion.

I think you writing is great but being as how I am pretty new at this myself, I do not know how it all works.
I do it for fun and well…the comments are a very nice perk.
Its great to just put something out there and not care what anyone thinks.
I personally would not join something that made blogging a chore because If I feel that I HAVE to do something I will not do it. I am just a brat like that.
But whatever you decide I will keep reading because I think you rock!!

Setting up your own domain isn’t that bad depending on who hosts your site. Some of them work with blog software and will actually have tools to help you install the software and updates, but it can get a little tricky depending how comfortable you are with stuff. But really having a free one is just as entertaining for us as you paying for one so whatever makes you happy!

i find it funny that you are considering “upgrading” when i just went thru hell “downgrading”…
having your own domain is no biggie, and i honestly dont think its needed unless your blog is getting EXTREMELY well known…
thats my 2 cents, anyway…

I’m fairly new to your blog so I don’t know who M. is, but LORD, if my family ever read my blog they’d disown me!!

Teeni- That is a really good point. I hadn’t thought about having to start over to get people to a new site.
Kaylee- That’s one no. I like decisiveness!
Drowsey- Not even the full $7? That does suck. Although, I guess if you’re not using the “wallspace” it’s almost enough to mail a small package.
Penelope- I will gladly buy you a tipple! But, for the record, I think you can do better than me.
Marie- I don’t really consider this writing since I’m usually just rambling on about crap, but thank you very much. *blush* Comments are a VERY nice perk. I remember the early days when I was talking to myself and the four walls.
Ron- Ok that stuff about the software just scared the crap out of me. 8[ I’m a very basic html code person.
Slyde- I do remember.
You might be a bit biased, but you have a good point. Between you and Teeni, I think I may just go with a tiny upgrade so that I can control the look of the blog and maybe add some stuff to the sidebars.
Jez- M.’s my husband. And I’m very glad that the rest of my family ignores this (despite me trying to get them to read it) considering the unflattering pics of some of them and the nasty expletives associated with others.

I’ve always just done mine for fun, but whatever floats your boat, ya know? If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, I say why not?
